Web Site Redesign Completed

I’ve just completed the re-design of my business web site. I think it looks more fresh and clean and less cluttered now, but I’d really appreciate your comments too.

Useful Tax Tool

If you’re in the Uk you might find this useful – www.uktaxcalculators.co.uk. Does what it says, but remember that it’s just a tool to help you plan your finances better not the final tax for your job. That’ll be for your payroll department to decide but at least it helps to give a figure.

I’m working on a new design for my main site at www.asounddesign.co.uk. Think it’s been up there too long and needs a fresh design. Stay tuned!

Contact Form For Your Facebook Page

I’ve recently started using a very handy App for some of my Facebook pages. It’s simply called the Contact Tab. What it does is add the possibility of people visiting your Facebook page contacting you via a contact form and/or email or a phone number. You can also list your other social network sites such as Twitter.

It’s a great tool for expanding your Page into more useful communication medium. My big criticism of Facebook Pages has always been that unless you allow comments on your Wall you can’t really interact with visitors who may want to use your services. This changes that in a big way.

You can get the App at http://apps.facebook.com/contacttab/?fb_page_id=176076366904

Your phone may be being traced

Android developer Trevor Eckhart recently noticed something odd on several EVO HTC devices: hidden software that phoned home to the carrier with details about how the phone was being used and where it was.

The software, Carrier IQ, tracked the location of the phone, what keys were pressed, which Web pages were visited, when calls were placed, and other information on how the device is used and when.

Scam?

I was contacted today by an Indian woman claiming to be from Microsoft. She said that they had received an error report from my PC that some problems had been detected.

It was all very convincing – she gave her name and employee ID number and a phone number she was calling from (02080999185). She said she was an MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional) and offered to allow me to talk to her manager, who had a public Google profile that would prove legitimacy.

But my alarm bells were ringing at the start of the call. So I asked which of the 4 computers I have was sending the report! Her explanation was that it doesn’t matter as when 1 computer gets a problem all of them will be affected. Yeah right! I’ve spent enough time fiddling with PCs to know that whilst a virus could affect 1 computer and affect all the others it is not inevitable and can’t happen unless they are networked or files passed from one to another. At this point I asked to speak to her manager, to which she replied ‘certainly’ and then hung up the phone. Noty heard back from her since. Funny that…

So, please be aware if you get this call. I have searched the Internet and found that others have got stung paying out for this company (or individual’s) “help”.

Have you had this call? Please share your comments here so that you can shed some light and maybe help others.

Just started using Google Adwords

I’ve just started using Google Adwords for one of my web sites today. I was given £75 of free credit as a freebie with another offer. I’ve always been a bit scared of pay-per click, probably because I never really understood it. Well, let’s give it a go.

Do any of you use Google Adwords? I’d be really keen to hear your stories, good, bad or otherwise about your experiences with it.
